How We Do It

Welcome. Mount Olivet Boys' Home of Jamaica

TOTAL WELFARE SERVICE: Mount Olivet Boys' Home provides residential care and other social services to vulnerable boys 6 to 18 years old in the following manner. We:

  • Provide opportunity for devotional and spiritual reflection.
  • Provide direct client, child welfare, program implementation and risk management and programmed and programmed recreational activities.
  • Develop and communicate program priorities and policies to guide operations and service delivery activities, quality assurance and employee training.
  • Provide IT support and training; develop and maintain information systems.

  • GUIDING PRINCIPLES: The Mount Olivet Boys' Home's values reflect our residence’s mission. Our values demonstrate our commitment to keep boys safe while strengthening and preserving families and a commitment to our partners, community, and colleagues. We are individually and collectively responsible for upholding these values while providing for their spiritual growth.

Diversity: We value the diversity of our residents, staff, providers, and communities. We demonstrate a commitment to diversity when we consider their viewpoints and contributions, and courageously confront lack of equity in opportunities and outcomes for boys, families, and staff.
Additionally, measures are being put in place to assist the Mount Olivet Boys' Home to fund itself to a greater degree. Sitting on ten (10) acres of land, there is plenty of room for the Home to embark on projects to generate funds needed for its operations, and Mr. Patrick Newman, Director, and his team have embarked on this in a highly noteworthy manner.

In the year (2018), an overseas group of forty-one (41) persons will be completing a roadway-repair project at the Home, as well as restoration of the slaughterhouse, to assist its chicken-, goat-, and pig-rearing businesses – the latter having been established through the assistance of Hope United Church. A grant has also been provided by the Council for Voluntary Social Services to fence a portion of land for farming, and to purchase four (4) head of cattle.

Digicel Foundation has also given a donation to commence a rabbit-rearing project, and the Home now has fifteen (15) rabbits. Further to these endeavours, the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ) has funded a project to construct a greenhouse on the property. This is now complete, and a market for the produce has already been secured.

A herb farm has also been established through the donations of Perishables Jamaica Limited, who will also purchase the produce upon reaping. The herbs planted include: pepper mint, fever grass, neem, and cola nut plants.

The Mount Olivet Boys' Home also hires persons from surrounding communities to farm cabbage, green peppers, carrots, cassava, peanuts, and pumpkin, for which a market has also been guaranteed. Fifty-six (56) fruit trees were planted this Labour Day through the donations of Access Financial Services, Christiana Branch. The company’s staff assisted with the planting of guava, jackfruit, june plum, star apple, sour sop, sweet sop, and orange trees.
